Troubleshooting

Fixes for the common snags in the CodeMorph beta, from SmartScreen to scans that come back empty.

Windows says "Windows protected your PC"

Beta installers aren't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen warns on first run. Click More info, confirm the app is CodeMorph, then Run anyway. See Install.

The Morph panel doesn't appear

  • Press Ctrl L, or click the typed counter in the status bar.
  • If the right sidebar is hidden, show it with View → Appearance → Secondary Side Bar.
  • Morph remembers whether it was open per project, so it may start closed in a project where you closed it.

Morph says "Open a folder to start" but a folder is open

CodeMorph needs a folder opened as a workspace, not just a single file. Use File → Open Folder on the project root. If you're in Restricted Mode, trust the workspace: the CodeMorph engine doesn't run in untrusted workspaces.

The scan shows "Scan failed"

The panel shows the underlying error message. The usual causes:

  • The folder is very large or not a project root. Open the folder that contains package.json, not a parent directory holding many projects.
  • Files can't be read. Check permissions, and that the project isn't on a disconnected network drive.

Click Back and try again. If it keeps failing, send us the message and we'll look into it.

The plan says 0 files

  • The project is already TypeScript. Only JavaScript files go into batches; existing .ts and .tsx files count as typed.
  • Your files are ignored. The scan respects .gitignore. If your source lives in an ignored folder, it won't be scanned.
  • Unusual extensions. The scanner reads .js, .jsx, .mjs, .cjs, .ts and .tsx.

Some imports show as unresolved

An unresolved import is either a file that wasn't found at the resolved path, or a package that isn't listed in package.json. Check for typos, missing files, and path aliases. Aliases are read from tsconfig.json or jsconfig.json compilerOptions.paths.

Explorer dots look wrong

Before your first scan, every JavaScript file shows a grey dot. After a scan, dots reflect the scanned files only, so files outside the graph (ignored or non-source) have none. Re-run Scan & Plan after big changes.

Conversion doesn't start

Conversion and Ask need your Anthropic key. Run CodeMorph: Set API Key and try again. If the key is set, check that it's valid and that your Anthropic account has credit.

Run & Verify fails on a clean project

Verify runs your own scripts. If npm test or npm run build fails before any migration, fix that first, or check that dependencies are installed with npm install.

Ask doesn't respond

Ask uses your Anthropic key and the model in the model picker. Check that a key is set, that the selected model is available on your account, and that your network allows connections to your provider.

Verify takes a long time

Run & Verify runs your own typecheck, tests and build, so it takes as long as they do. If your tests are slow, consider a faster test script for local verification and keep the full suite in CI.

Tests pass in my terminal but fail in Verify

Verify runs the test script from package.json in the project folder. If your tests rely on environment variables or a running service, make sure they're available to the editor, for example by starting CodeMorph from a terminal where they're set with codemorph ..

A file keeps landing in review

It couldn't be typed cleanly within its repair attempts. Open it, read the remaining diagnostics, and either fix them by hand or give Morph a specific instruction, such as how a value should be typed.

The scan is missing files I expected

Check that they aren't ignored by a .gitignore, that they use a supported extension, and that they're under 1 MB. Files outside the workspace folder aren't scanned.

Ctrl+L doesn't expand my selection anymore

That's intentional: Ctrl L opens Morph. Rebind it in File → Preferences → Keyboard Shortcuts if you prefer the old behavior.

An extension isn't in the marketplace

CodeMorph uses Open VSX. Extensions published only to Microsoft's marketplace don't appear. Many authors publish to both; if yours doesn't, ask them to.
